WHAT YOU CAN DO
SPONSOR A DOG
It couldn’t be easier to sponsor a dog in our care, or to gift a sponsorship to a friend or loved one for as little as £1 per week* (£4.34 per month).
£1 per week
Why we need your support
- Every week 1000 people are making the call to give up their dog.
- While most dogs find a loving new home within about six weeks, some dogs need love and support for longer.
- We rely on sponsorships to look after the 1600 dogs in our care at any one time.
Your support can make the world of difference.

Ela
Ela was found as a stray in Ireland and had been rehomed through another organization before arriving at Ogbukapets in early 2022. Ela’s strong dislike for other dogs required him to be muzzled on walks, and his high energy and strength meant he needed an owner who could handle his needs.
Thankfully, his carers worked diligently with Ela on his behaviour, and in time, a couple who had sponsored him decided to rehome him. After months of preparing their home and visiting the Centre, Ela was officially rehomed in July 2023.
Ela is now the sole dog in his new home, receiving all the attention from his loving owners. He also enjoys beautiful countryside walks, where he can explore and thrive in his new surroundings.
END THE DOG MEAT TRADE
After the Regency of Karanganyar in Central Java announced plans to eliminate the dog meat trade, provincial authorities have rallied behind the initiative. Concurrently, Bali is ramping up efforts to shut down all dog meat restaurants island-wide, declaring the practice illegal.
On June 17th, Karanganyar Regency on Java, the most populous island in Indonesia, declared its intention to completely eradicate the dog meat trade within its borders. Authorities have already begun discussions with dog meat vendors about alternative livelihoods for families who rely on this trade. This initiative is expected to save 2,000 dogs each month. Following this significant move—the first of its kind on Java—authorities across the island are advocating for an end to the trade, citing its extreme cruelty and the public health risks, particularly the spread of the rabies virus.
The Central Java Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Service quickly voiced its support for Karanganyar’s decisive action, emphasizing the trade’s illegality, dangers, and inherent cruelty. On June 27th, the Regent of Wonogiri joined the call to end the dog meat trade in his Central Javan Regency. These developments are particularly impactful given that Central Java is a major center for the dog meat trade on the island, which is home to over half of Indonesia’s population.
Meanwhile, in Bali, a top tourist destination in Indonesia, local reports indicate that 77 dog meat stalls have been shut down. Authorities have vowed to continue cracking down on those who persist in the trade. The Head of Animal Health stated that the sale of dog meat is “clearly prohibited by law because dog meat is not considered food” and it poses a significant risk of spreading rabies.
These recent actions are consistent with a 2018 directive from the Central Government to all provincial governments. This directive followed a pledge at the National Coordination of Animal Welfare meeting in Jakarta last year, where officials condemned the dog meat trade as “torture for animals” after reviewing footage from Dog Meat Free Indonesia (DMFI) investigations. They declared that “dog meat or any animal not registered as farm animals is illegal.” This long-awaited change comes after years of DMFI investigations that documented the brutal treatment of dogs, leading to widespread national and global condemnation.

Our Services
VETERINARY CARE
At our shelter, we ensure that every new dog receives neutering and deworming upon arrival. While some dogs require extensive resources for surgeries, amputations, and other major operations, the average annual cost for basic medication and veterinary care for a healthy dog is approximately $25.
SHELTER/FARM
Our shelter is supported by a dedicated team of over 20 individuals. Together, we manage and care for the pack, ensuring each dog is fed, taken for daily walks around the farm, and provided with a clean living space. We also handle logistics to procure dog food, coordinate with veterinarians, and manage customer service. While the work is demanding, including tasks like cleaning and sanitation, it is incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
FOOD COST
We consume more than 4 tons of dog food every week! This is one of the biggest expenses we have in the shelter. We can never afford to run out of food to feed our animals. On average, each dog consumes around $25 of food every single month.
WHY WE DO THIS
Our mission is to provide a home to all the dogs we care for. We are a temporary shelter for hundreds of doggies seeking a second opportunity and a permanent home for others who probably will never find a family. We are a non-profit organisation, founded by Ogbuka Peter in 2017 for promoting well-being and respect for animals.
What is included in your donation?
Caring for a large pack of dogs presents numerous challenges. Fortunately, we have a dedicated team who ensure our dogs are neutered, fed, cleaned, and loved daily. The monthly cost for each dog is approximately $36, covering veterinary care, food, and shelter maintenance.
